Why upgrade to LED lighting for rugby fields?

Gas lamps are expensive and no longer available

Many rugby fields still use gas or metal halide lamps. That technology is slowly disappearing from the market. Replacement lamps are difficult to find, expensive, and often of varying quality. Failures are happening more and more frequently, and that's precisely what leads to canceled training sessions or matches. LED lighting removes that uncertainty.

Maintenance costs handsomely

With classic installations, maintenance costs accumulate. Lamps need to be replaced regularly, and breakdowns during the season are not uncommon. LED lighting works for years with minimal maintenance. This saves not only money but also time for the club.

Energy costs are rising rapidly

Rugby requires powerful lighting, often several evenings a week. Old installations consume a lot of electricity and usually run at full power, even when not necessary. LED lighting uses precisely the light level required for training or matches and reduces energy consumption.

No longer in accordance with current standards

Many existing fields no longer meet the required lux values or uniformity. You notice this as dark zones, glare, or insufficient visibility during fast gameplay. This can lead to restrictions or rejection during matches.

The benefits of LED lighting for rugby fields

Even and powerful light

Rugby places high demands on lighting. High kicks, fast phases, and wide play call for even light distribution across the entire field. LED fixtures provide bright, powerful light without dark zones, so players and referees can always follow the ball well.

Lower energy costs

LED lighting uses up to 60–70% less energy and classic gas or metal vapor installations. Because you only use the light that is needed, your consumption immediately drops.

Full compliance with standards and environment

The installation meets NEN-EN 12193 and to the guidelines of World Rugby. Thanks to targeted light emission, the light stays on the field and you avoid complaints from the surroundings. This way, you are technically and practically completely in order.

Dimmable and flexible in application

Not every moment calls for the same light level. With LED lighting, you can easily switch between Training, competition, or maintenance. This way, you avoid unnecessary consumption and always play under the right conditions, adapted to the use of the field.

Durable quality

LED fixtures are built for intensive outdoor use. They last 50,000 to 100,000 burning hours and continue to perform reliably in rain, wind, and cold. This means years of carefree use with minimal maintenance.

Sports fields lit by EcoSports

EcoSports has already completed numerous LED lighting projects for sports fields in Flanders, including rugby fields. Always with even light, correct lux and class requirements, and clear energy savings for clubs and municipalities.

Our approach to rugby field lighting

At EcoSports, you don't get standard lighting, but rather a Well-thought-out total solution for your rugby field. Every part of the process is focused on delivering the right light, without unnecessary costs or surprises.

Free comprehensive custom lighting study

We start with a non-binding lighting study in which we analyze the rugby field, its immediate surroundings, and its intended use. We will look at field dimensions, mast positions, training and match levels, and any requirements from the municipality or sports association.

Based on this, we calculate exactly How much light points required, what light level is needed, and how the lighting is optimally distributed for an even and safe playing field.

Type of lighting

We exclusively work with high-quality LED fixtures designed for outdoor sports facilities. Depending on the situation, we apply:

  • Modular fixtures for maximum aiming accuracy and flexibility
  • Asymmetric fittings that keep the light focused on the playing field and limit stray light into the surroundings

This creates a optimal light distribution with minimal glare for players and referees, and less light pollution for residents.

Safe Installation of Fixtures and Poles

At EcoSports, we care about rugged and durable lighting poles that fully comply with applicable safety and construction standards. Outdated masts can pose a risk during heavy winds or storms; therefore, we carefully assess every situation and always recommend the safest solution.

We are installing lighting poles on the most strategic locations and at the right heights. Where possible, the old masts will be reused.

Installation and light measurement

After installation, all fittings precisely aligned and adjusted. Then in the evening we perform a professional light measurement to check if the required light level, uniformity, and glare values are met.

You will receive a measurement report showing that the installation complies with the applicable standards, so the field is immediately ready for training and matches.

Lighting Levels and Classes for Rugby Pitches

As a rugby club in Flanders, you want to be sure that your fields meet the correct light levels. Both Rugby Flanders and international sports federations recommend different lux values depending on the level of use:

Class III: training and recreational use (± 100 lux)

For training and recreational play, typically suffices Class III. With a light level around 100 lux do players have enough visibility to train safely and comfortably. This is ideal for youth training, club training, and weekday practice sessions.

Class II: amateur and club matches (approx. 200 lux)

During competitive matches, the demands increase. The game speeds up, passes are sharper, and high kicks occur more frequently. Class II requests a light level of ± 200 lux.

This level ensures that players, referees, and spectators can clearly follow the game, across the entire field and into the corners. For most clubs, this is the standard for official matches.

Class I: National and top-level competitions (± 500 lux)

For national competitions and top matches Class I. The required brightness is between 500 and 750 lux, with extra attention to uniformity and Blinding.

The difference isn't just in more light, but primarily in better light: no dark zones, no harsh contrasts, and optimal visibility for every play.

Frequently Asked Questions about LED Tennis Lighting

Can existing masts be reused?

In many cases, existing masts can be reused. During the lighting study, we always check the stability, height, and position of the poles. If they are technically sound and suitable for the desired light class, they remain perfectly usable. This reduces the overall investment.

For rugby fields, the required light intensity depends on the level of use: Class III asks approximately 100 lux for training and recreational use, Class II approximately 200 lux for club and amateur matches, and Class I round 500 lux for national and top matches. During the lighting study, we will determine which class best suits your club and how you can easily switch between these light levels.

With LED lighting, you save on average 60 to 70% energy Compared to traditional gas or metal halide lamps. In combination with dimmable lighting scenarios, the savings often increase even further, especially with regular use.

Yes. The lighting can be easily operated via a Web portal app. You set fixed lighting scenarios for training, competition, or maintenance and turn the lighting on and off locally or remotely. This increases ease of use and prevents unnecessary consumption.

Our LED fixtures have a lifespan of 50,000 to 100,000 burning hours. This means years of reliable use with minimal maintenance. In practice, periodic visual inspection and cleaning of the fixtures suffice.
